Control boards send the control signals to the dimmer using various methods. Modern methods allow for two-way communication between the
control board
and the dimmers and enable control of motorized
accessories
such as scrollers, automated yokes and so on. They also enable communication between the lighting
control board
and various other electronic and computerized control machines of sound equipment,
stage
machinery and special effects. Some communication methods also enable wide band communication with intelligent luminaires which need numerous complex instructions for their many controllable functions.
Before the development of more sophisticated digital communication, analogue communication systems were employed. The USITT developed two standard protocols - the analogue AMX 192 and the digital DMX 512 protocols. Other protocols used by computerized control boards and other equipment are
MIDI
and SMPTE.
