Uses of Profile-Spots in the Theatre

Uses of profile-spots in the Theatre
A major part of the lighting rig in many theatres consists of profile-spots, with their high light output and optical precision. Variable-lens profile-spots are a popular choice for a fixed lighting rig of a repertory theatre where their additional versatility in selecting the beam angle gives them an advantage over fixed-angle profile-spot, as they can be put to totally different uses in different productions.
A profile-spot is a truly versatile tool used in many ways. It can be hard focused to attain a well defined light beam which can be shaped by the shutters and

project gobo patterns. When set slightly out of focus, the profile-spot can provide a soft edge beam of light which blends easily with the light of other luminaires.
Profile-spots are used for all the basic functions of stage lighting: for front lighting , backlighting, and sidelighting as well as whenever a particular well defined beam shape is required. The use of profile-spots is almost mandatory where light scatter presents a problem, as is the case with FOH positions.
